More waterfalls & beautiful shoreline

 First stop this morning was Grand Marais to get a good cup of coffee at the Dream Bean Machine, great coffee and very friendly staff.


We continued on through Pictured Rock National  Park, first hiking out to Sable falls.


We found our way to the lake shore and took a walk in search of the infamous Lake Superior Agate - no luck, but did find a few gems.

We then hiked up to the Log Slide scenic overlook. Logging was a big industry and this was part of the log hauling equipment and one of the “slides” used to get the logs down to the lake. We chose to just look down the slide rather than climb down and then have to climb back up.




Our next hike was out to the Au Sable Light Station. 


This afternoon as we traveled further along the lake shore, temperatures dropped into the upper 50’s. Some of the roads were a bit challenging also due to lack of pavement and ruts. The next hike took us out to the Chapel Falls.


The last hike of the day was to the Miner’s Falls, followed by the Miner’s Castle scenic overlook.

Day 1

 We left Manitowish Waters mid afternoon, after spending a wonderful weekend biking, kayaking, swimming, overeating, and enjoying the company of a group of very dear friends. It was a hot ride; upper 90’s -100 degrees as we headed to Escanaba MI, and didn’t cool down into the 80’s until dusk which was after 9 pm.   We drove through St Germain, Eagle River (areas we had snowmobiled through back in the late 70’s). Our hotel in Escanaba was only a few blocks to the Stone House restaurant for a nice dinner. It felt good to stretch our legs, and even better to get a good night’s sleep in our air conditioned room.

“Two cool cats in a groovy kind of way” 😂

 As we were leaving our hotel this morning a nice lady that worked there came over to take a look at the bike and chat with us. Her comment was “Well you guys sure look like you’re having fun, I think you’re a couple of cool cats in a groovy kind of way” 😂.  Well we had been very lucky with our weather but this morning we did get caught in the rain. We decided to wait it out at Connie’s Coffee shop in Ontanagan. After the rain subsided we had beautiful warm temps and blue skies for the remainder of the day. We made our way over to the Porcupine Mtns and hiked out to an overlook. It was a challenging hike with hills, rocks, roots, foliage so thick it covered the trail and somewhat muddy from the earlier rain, but we felt good about the challenge. M We then took a much shorter walk to an overlook at the Lake of the Clouds. Our last stop was a hike out to the water falls at Presque Isle. Tonight we watchEd the storm roll in across Lake Gogebic, grateful to be off the bike. Tomor...

The tale of the Edmund Fitzgerald

 Today we were blessed once again with blue skies and warm temperatures. After leaving Sault Ste Marie  we headed west and followed the shoreline of Lake Superior. Our first stop was the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. It told the stories of many of the ships that went down just off the coast of  Whitefish Point. Despite the severe weather it was surprising how many sunk simply because they ran into each other. The most famous and largest of all the vessels that sank off of White Fish point was the Edmund Fitzgerald.  After lunch in Paradise , ( yes their really is a town named Paradise- not sure why..) we headed to the Tahquamenon State Park where we hiked a few miles to take in the views of the lower and upper falls. Today our total mileage was 190 miles, we were happy to call it day as we checked in to the Pleasant Moose Lodge , in Newberry ( which is the moose capital of the UP! )  Unfortunately or fortunately we did not encounter a single moose. .
