Day 2 Escanaba to St Ignace

We had a beautiful & much cooler ride today.  Our first destination was Big Spring (Kitchi-iti-kipi). At 200 ft across and 40 ft deep, it is Michigan’s largest freshwater spring. More than 10,000 gallons a minute gush up from fissures in the underlying limestone. We boarded the self guided raft that is attached to a pulley that took us out to a vantage point where we could peer into the crystal clear water and see the variety of trout swimming over the clouds of sand that are bubbling up from the springs.

Our next stop was Manistique. After lunch at the Upper Crust, we walked atop the breakwater dodging the waves, to the East Breakwater light house. After leaving Manistique, we continued on in search for a place to purchase smoked fish. We were rewarded with a stop at the Hog Island Country Store, where I also picked up a packet of dried morel mushrooms with a recipe for a creamy morel bisque.

One of the interesting sights today ( who knew shoes grew on trees? ), and a lovely poem.

  1. While I have no idea how to to pronounce "Kitchi-iti-kipi", it sure is beautiful. Hope we are on your short list for that morel bisque! How many miles did you put on today?
